Check if the 1957 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 Can Still Lay Rubber After Three Decades of Being Dormant

Oldsmobile Rocket 88, barn find outside garage

The odometer shows just over 85,000 miles though he isn’t sure whether those are the actual miles or if it has turned over 100,000 already. The spare tire in the pickup truck appears to be the original one, and a look under the hood shows a mechanically complete car.

They add a battery to see if the headlights work and find that one does, the radio additionally turns on and the speakers work but the radio doesn’t manage to tune into an actual station.

They find that the car has spark and compression and clean off the plugs after initial attempts to get the car to turn over are not successful. Eventually, the vintage Oldsmobile does start and turn over, but the fuel pump isn’t on, so it dies quickly; with the fuel pump in place, it starts but doesn’t run smoothly. Later, they add some water to the radiator, and examine much of the mechanical parts of the car, noting that it does need some work and adjustments but overall, is in decent condition.

Later, with the car running, they drive it around the property and find that the transmission and speedometer both work though it will need work to get it running smoothly, notably, the carburetor needs a re-build. For collectors interested in a project that runs, the Oldsmobile Rocket 88 is currently for sale on eBay, the link to the listing is in the description of the video on YouTube. Their hope is that the next owner will be a collector who will appreciate the car and get it running well rather than simply using it for parts
