Rare Shelby GT500 first generation 1967 rescued from garage

Watch this classic Ford Shelby GT500 see the light of day after 30 years.

O Ford Shelby GT500 is one of the most popular high-performance Mustangs in the lineup of all time. The mid-60s models are the most sought after, especially as they are the first generation. Automotive archaeologist Ryan Brutt shared images of a Shelby GT500 from 1967 discovered in a garage and its restoration project in Auto Archeology YouTube channel.

The Shelby GT500 went 30 years without seeing the light of day

Brutt told us that the classic Shelby has been sitting around for at least 30 years. What they did to him during that time may shock readers. “They used the car as a storage rack and ladder, denting the roof,” Brutt said. The current owner’s father bought this car in the late 70’s, and didn’t really fall in love with it.

Negligence means the car has fallen into disrepair, which it shouldn’t, as this car is a absolute gem.

the good news

Since this classic Shelby GT500 has been neglected, it has struggled in recent decades. However, when asked if there are any plans to restore the car, Brutt had good news to share. “The car is being restored now. It was extremely rough, whoever fixed it in the 80’s or 90’s would roast it with a brass rod and not weld it. All the seams are shiny when you clean them a little.”

The current owner, son of the original owner, understands that it is highly desirable and “very rare and sentimental” and therefore hopes to keep it for a restoration project. Otherwise, the other option would be to sell the car. It would be a great shame to see it go as it is such a unique car and hard to find in today’s market.

After investigating the garage and noticing that there are some original parts, some additional features from other cars and repair work, they bring it out into the sunlight. In the end, it’s safe to say the owner is happy to keep it and restore it in great condition. After all, the son keeps many “great memories” in the car and doesn’t want to see him leave.
