The interesting story behind the rare 1966 Chevrolet Nova SS L79 found

The lady explained she would have to visit with her brother about his offer. She called back the next day and told Tim they would accept $3,000.

The price sounds very cheap for what is essentially a legendary Nova SS with 56,000 original miles. However, the coupe has some major rust issues. Tim mentioned rust in the rear quarters, the front fenders, and hood. The driver’s side rim was so rusted that Lay could hardly believe it held up the car. However, the trunk floor was solid, as were the floors and the framerails.

Tim was happy to see the last six digits of the VIN matched the stampings on the block. He believes the car is complete save for the dual-snorkel air cleaner.

“I’m a car nut,” says Tim. “I’ve got Chevelles, Road Runners, and ‘Cudas.”

Tim also said he loves the Rare Finds articles and this magazine. When he got the car he told his Uncle Larry (another car enthusiast) that he was going to “get hold of you guys and see if we can get it in the magazine.”

“The ’66 coupe had been sitting there tantalizing enthusiasts for more than 40 years”

Tim has restored three Novas already as well as a Road Runner and “some Camaros.” He plans to fully restore this L79 Nova SS. “I guess restoring cars is a little more than a hobby,” he admits. He has been with the local gas company for 23 years, so he doesn’t want to quit his regular job.

In the next few years Tim will complete the L79 Nova SS restoration. The car has gone to a good home.
