1950s Chevrolet Bel Air Showdown: Drag Racing Duel Between a 1955 and a 1957

FourWheels TV shows the 2 classic Chevys take each other on at the Cordova Dragway to see which is the fastest Bel Air of the 1950s.

Among classic car enthusiasts, the Chevrolet Bel Air remains one of the most celebrated and appreciated cars today. While the Bel Air is a frequent occupant of car collections and car shows, it isn’t unusual to see one still on the drag strip or race track either.

YouTube channel FourWheels TV shows that two of the most iconic Bel Air model years are alive and well in this clip from the World Series Of Drag Racing at the Cordova Dragway. Check out the video to see these two classic Chevy cars take each other on in a race.

’55 Bel Air Versus ’57 Bel Air

The 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air known as “Peppermint Twist” goes against the 1957 Bel Air “Shake Rattle and Run” in the first drag race of the video. At the start, before both cars line up. The ’55 does a burnout that produces a sizeable cloud of smoke, gearing up to take on its rival of the same namesake which does a burnout of its own in the background.

Their rumbling engines are a reminder of the size and capabilities these classic Chevys have under the hood. The camera angle provides a close-up view of the ’55 before each line up and take off from the starting point of the race.

As each car speeds away, the camera angle captures the view from the rear of both cars as they move away from the camera. While both cars appear to be in close proximity to one another for the duration of the race, as they approach the finish line, the boards show the finish times and reveal a clear winner. The 1957 Bel Air finishes first with a 4.58-second finish time and 159.46 mph top speed while the 1955 Bel Air comes in second at 4.92 seconds and a 147.26 mph top speed.

Classic Car Drag Race

Later, a red Dodge station wagon takes on a white two-door coupe. This race, like the first one, is close and it appears the coupe takes the win from the camera angle but the numbers don’t lie and the victory belongs to the wagon with a 10.05 second finish time and 129.42 mph top speed against the coupe’s 11.79-second finish and 109.62 mph top speed.

The video finishes off with a few additional drag races with classic muscle cars challenging each other for the win in a series of close races and individual times.
